The Department of
Petroleum Resources has given approval for re-entry into the Gas Reserve at Umuerum
in Ayamelum Council Area of Anambra State.
Governor Willie Obiano
revealed this when he attended a function of the Catholic Archdiocese of
Onitsha at St Mary's Parish, Umuerum in Ayamelum Council Area of the State.
Governor Obiano who
noted that Umuerum is blessed with one of the largest Gas Deposit in the
Country, recalled how a multi-national Oil Company, Shell had discovered the
Mineral resource 40 years ago and capped it because they were after Premium
Motor Spirit, PMS.
He said what is delaying
the full exploration of the Gas Reserve is ongoing negotiations with a South
African Investor who is to take over the project and expressed the hope that
when operational, the project will create lots of jobs and wealth opportunities
for people of Ayamelum area.
Governor Obiano observed
that due to the large expanse of virgin arable land which the Ayamelum
possesses, the area holds great prospects for the future of the state which is
being repositioned to anchor on Agriculture, assuring that his government will
sustain its support to farmers in the area towards the achievement of its
agricultural revolution initiative.
The governor called on
people of the area to utilize the Continuous Voter Registration exercise which
will take place later in the year to ensure that they are eligible to vote,
reminding them that support for his administration will guarantee the
realization of all the lofty projects ongoing across the state.
